Gavin McSkeane

In this collection of paintings, I delve into the expanse of the ocean, weaving together narratives inspired by Maine’s maritime painting tradition, reflections on love and loss, and the rugged charm of the working waterfront.

My current exhibition mostly depicts figures, the ocean and its associated superstitions. The sea became a metaphor for the emotions that accompany my experience, serving as a backdrop for moments of love and longing. Drawing from the influence of esteemed Maine painters, the wisdom of stoic philosophy, and my personal journey into adulthood, these works offer an exploration of the human experience against the backdrop of the sea.

Through reminiscent imagery and emotive brushwork, I aim to evoke a visceral response, inviting viewers to reflect on the fleeting nature of connection and the enduring ache of absence. Rooted in my own journey of self-discovery, the paintings serve as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and the timeless allure of the ocean as a symbol of life's ever-changing currents.

Ultimately, my hope is that this collection serves as a source of inspiration and contemplation, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and connection with the themes of love, loss, and the enduring beauty of the sea.
